Rising Stars: Meet Micah Walls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Walls.

Hi Micah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a Young mother at 18, I figured the best thing for me to do would be to go to school, graduate, and become an FBI agent/police officer/detective. I knew this was my dream and I could see myself being this great detective solving murders/crimes. People would always tell me I looked like a police officer or carried myself as one already so it was a great fit. I thought so too but I knew that would take up a lot of my time and my son was too young for me to actually venture off into that career path. So, I decided that I needed to do something that gives me time and freedom to be a full-time mother as well. Never thought that after graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s in criminal justice that I would become a self-made entrepreneur in the beauty industry.

I’ve always had natural talent within all things beauty: hair, nails, styling, and eyebrows! I worked in the hair salon for years in the pursuit of becoming a hairstylist. When I learned how to fill my eyebrows in just for my own enhancement, I only became better over the years and people often gave me compliments on my eyebrows. Friends and family would ask me to do their hair and eyebrows and my response would be “Oh I only do mine I don’t know how to do others.” But the go-getter in me decided to put my talent into profit. When I came across the technique at the time called “microblading”, I took the opportunity to do my research and take the class. Knowing that it was very different from just using a pencil to draw in eyebrows, I knew I would be able to learn and teach myself once I got the basics understood because a hidden talent of mine is that I can free-hand draw really well.

Since 2018, I have taken the time out to perfect my craft over the years taking 2 classes within that time until I felt comfortable with actually charging for my services. When it became popular here in Detroit, I started to advertise myself seeing as though I felt ready enough to work for myself and build my brand. As of now, I’ve had great success and feedback from all of my clients which only pushes me to continue. Of course, I’ve had moments where I felt like this wasn’t the path for me but whenever I felt that moment of giving up, God would send me a client which reminded me that my work is speaking for itself. Here I am today, constantly building my brand, adding to my services, and increasing my clientele. Now, I’m working towards expanding the Brow Embroidery Brand by bringing something to Michigan that no one has done yet which will benefit all PMU artist locally. I can’t go into full detail however; it is going to be beneficial to all local PMU/brow artist.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being a PMU artist has its ups and downs but they all have learning lessons which helps add value to your brand. You are starting out doing something you’ve never done before, and on someone’s face at that! So yes, it is very scary in the beginning which is why I didn’t charge anyone until I became comfortable with my skill. It is hard gaining clientele especially if you are new to the industry. Some struggles that a lot of artist like myself will face is consistency; knowing when to keep going even if you don’t see progress or growth in your clientele. Another struggle is gaining people to trust your expertise. If you have good cust0mer service and know how to initiate a relationship with the client which calms their nerves then you will most likely gain their trust from your initial consultation. Each struggle that I have faced has added to me in a positive way as an entrepreneur, and woman in general.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a PMU (permanent makeup) artist and I specialize in eyebrow tinting, shaping, and semi-permanent tattooing. I create eyebrows to be the perfect shape using a mapping technique. This technique uses an inked string and one’s facial features to pre-draw the eyebrows. Once the eyebrows are drawn, I will use a needle and tattoo machine to apply the pigment into the skin which creates beautiful long-lasting brows. If you are not comfortable with needles, I also have an option to provide the same look with henna. Henna tint will also give you bomb brows but only lasting 2-3 weeks. I also use the same technique to create 3d hair strokes in one’s scalp for areas of hair loss such as edges, bald spots and thinning. I’m now featuring a new service for men which will give them an opportunity to get rid of the hair dye and have semi-permanent facial hair. Yes! Men can now receive the same service to make sure that their beard, mustache, and hairline never fades away again!

I am most proud of the fact that I have came this far while still being a full-time single mother supporting my son in his athletic talents as well. I often visualize myself of elastigirl from Incredibles because I’m able to stretch myself far and thing to meet all of my requirements’/goals. There were moments when I felt that I wasn’t receiving full support or clients consistently so it discouraged me. However, I never stopped. Even if I only had one client a month I kept going. I always prayed and asked God that if he blessed me with one client a week/month I am forever grateful with just that one. That was my consistent prayer and it still is. I’m also very proud of the image, idea and everything behind my brand (logo, name, social media presence, etc) has all came from my own creativity. I’ve done everything from creating my website, slogans, revamped logo, and my business name with hard work and heavy thinking. I feel like that’s a big accomplishment because most people will pay others to do so but when you don’t have the money you really can see what hidden talents you have. Within in this process of building my brand I have discovered many.

I feel that what sets me apart from others is my customer service. In my opinion, I know that my work isn’t the best of the best or what I want it to be just yet so I’m constantly sharpening my skills to become better meanwhile, my customer service sets me apart from my work and others. I have had many clients come to me just because they “heard” I was very professional and made the process comfortable. I pride myself on that because I often hear “to be s0 young you have great customer service”. I think that’s the greatest compliment because it makes me feel confident in brand.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I feel that the greatest collaboration would come from a well-respected Local, politician, community activist willing to help me create a way to gift women who suffer from hair loss due to chemotherapy with a new set of brows. I want to give back and what better way to do so than to do what I know best, create bomb brows, and boost self-confidence! This of course would be funded by donations or others willing to pay for the product for their services. My time, skill, and technique will be my part of the donation. Another way I would like to receive support is through televised advertisement. I would love to one day be featured on fox 2 news Detroit to showcase my work and offer my services to those who are not on social media to see my advertisement.
